Shown here are several of the popular fly patterns used here in Alaska. For some of you that have been to Alaska these may be in your fly box at home. For other fishers that come to the state from other parts of the country or around the world they may be considered gaudy creations that could not possibly entice a trout or salmon to the hook. Well let me assure you that while many are gaudy they do catch fish. One angler on an Alagnak River float last year had with him a creation he dubbed "The Alagnak Shrimp" it looked to be tied on a heavy # 4 wire hook with bead chain eyes and a very generous orange cactus chenille body. After a few days many of his fellow anglers were expressing a more then curious interest in his creation with words of "can I buy one?", "cut his line" and "not again" being heard many times. Sad to say this example of perhaps a late winter night at the tying bench was lost to one of many excellent rainbow trout that he was able to bring to hand. So sit down at your vice and tie up a few of the patterns shown here and of course be sure to bring along that experimental offering, it could prove to be the pattern of a lifetime.
